Video Aspect Ratios Explained: 16:9, 9:16, 1:1 and 4:5

Understand common frame shapes and choose between cropping, padding and reframing.

Aspect ratio describes the shape of the frame, not its resolution. A 1920 × 1080 video and a 1280 × 720 video are both 16:9 even though they contain different numbers of pixels.

Common ratios and their shapes

  • 16:9 is a wide landscape frame used by many displays and video players.
  • 9:16 is the vertical version designed to fill a portrait phone screen.
  • 1:1 is square and useful in grid-based layouts.
  • 4:5 is a taller portrait frame that shows more vertical area than a square without becoming full-screen vertical.

Cropping changes what the viewer sees

Turning a wide 16:9 frame into 9:16 removes a large amount from the left and right unless the image is scaled down with padding. Important subjects near the edges may disappear.

Automatic center cropping works only when the subject remains near the center. Interviews, demonstrations and multi-person scenes often need manual reframing.

Padding preserves the whole frame

Contain mode fits the full source inside the new aspect ratio and fills unused space with a background. This prevents cropping but produces bars or designed margins.

Stretching fills the frame without bars or cropping, but it distorts faces and objects. It should rarely be used for normal video.

Plan for multiple versions during production

When content must work in both landscape and portrait, keep essential action inside a safe central area, record at sufficient resolution and capture alternate shots when possible. Reframing is easier when the source was composed with multiple outputs in mind.
