WebP vs JPG: Which Format Should You Use?

WebP and JPEG can both store photographs with lossy compression, but they differ in features, efficiency and compatibility with older workflows. The right choice depends on where the file will be used.

Where WebP is strong

WebP supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation. Modern browsers widely support it, making it useful for website images where reducing transfer size matters.

For many photographs, a well-encoded WebP can be smaller than a JPEG with a similar visible result. The exact saving varies by image and encoder settings, so compare real outputs rather than relying on one universal percentage.

Where JPEG remains practical

JPEG opens in almost every photo editor, document workflow, print service and upload form. It is still the safer choice when a platform explicitly requests JPG or when the recipient may use older software.

JPEG does not support transparency. It is also a poor choice for graphics with sharp text, icons or large flat-color areas when those edges must remain perfectly crisp.

Choose based on the destination

  • Website photos: WebP is often an efficient default, with a fallback only when your audience requires it.
  • Application forms: follow the listed format exactly; JPEG is commonly accepted.
  • Editable master files: keep the original high-quality source instead of treating either export as the master.
  • Transparent graphics: use WebP or PNG, not JPEG.

Avoid repeated conversions

Converting a JPEG to WebP can reduce file size, but it cannot restore detail already removed by the JPEG. Repeated lossy conversions can accumulate artifacts. Always create new delivery files from the best available source.
