MP4 and WebM are container formats. A container organizes video, audio and metadata, while codecs define how the picture and sound are compressed. The extension alone does not tell the complete technical story.
MP4 prioritizes broad compatibility
MP4 files commonly contain H.264 video and AAC audio, a combination supported by many phones, editors, presentation tools and websites. This makes MP4 a dependable delivery format when the recipient or software is unknown.
Actual support still depends on the codecs inside the file. An MP4 container can hold other codecs that a particular device may not decode.
WebM is designed for open web media
WebM commonly contains VP8, VP9 or AV1 video with Opus or Vorbis audio. It is well supported in modern browsers and can be useful for browser-generated recordings or web delivery.
Some desktop editing and older business workflows still handle MP4 more smoothly, so WebM may require conversion before editing or sharing.
Quality depends on encoding, not the extension
A poorly encoded MP4 can look worse than a carefully encoded WebM, and the reverse is also true. Resolution, bitrate, frame rate, codec settings and source quality all affect the result.
Compare output at the same visual target rather than assuming one extension always wins.

- Choose MP4 when broad playback and editing compatibility is the priority.
- Choose WebM for compatible web workflows or browser-generated output.
- Keep a high-quality master before creating smaller delivery versions.
