How animated GIF compression works

Animated GIF files can become large because every frame uses a limited color palette and the format is less efficient than modern video. This tool can reduce dimensions, use fewer colors and optionally keep fewer frames.

Stronger settings create a smaller file but can make gradients rougher or motion less smooth. The Balanced preset is the safest starting point.

When to use video instead

For long animations or photographic footage, MP4 or WebM is usually much smaller than GIF. GIF is most useful for short loops, simple graphics, demonstrations and compatibility with places that specifically require GIF.

Yes. The tool decodes and re-encodes the animation. Strong frame sampling can make motion less smooth.
