Animated GIF is convenient but inefficient for long or photographic motion. A compressor can preserve animation while reducing dimensions, palette colors and frames, but each change affects visual quality differently.
Reduce dimensions before removing too many frames
A GIF shown at 500 pixels wide does not need a 1600-pixel source. Reducing dimensions cuts work from every frame and often creates a large saving.
Frame sampling can shrink the file further, but aggressive sampling makes motion look uneven.
Color reduction affects gradients
GIF frames use limited palettes. Fewer colors can work well for icons, diagrams and screen recordings, while photos and smooth gradients may show banding.
Start with the balanced preset and inspect faces, shadows and color transitions.
When to use MP4 or WebM instead
For longer animation, video formats are normally more efficient and provide smoother motion. Use GIF when the destination specifically requires it or when a short loop must work in a GIF-only workflow.
Keep a high-quality source video or image sequence when possible.

- Crop unused borders before compression.
- Resize to the real display width.
- Reduce colors gradually.
- Sample frames only when motion remains understandable.
- Open the downloaded file and confirm it is still animated.
