Image Quality Settings Explained for JPG and WebP Exports

Use quality sliders intelligently instead of treating one percentage as a universal measurement of image quality.

A quality value is an instruction to a particular encoder, not a universal percentage of the original image that remains. An 80 setting in one tool can produce a different file size and visual result from 80 in another tool or format.

Quality numbers are not directly comparable

JPEG and WebP use different compression systems, and individual encoders make different decisions. The same numeric setting can therefore create different artifacts, colors and file sizes.

Use the slider as a repeatable control inside one workflow, not as proof that the export has a specific objective quality level.

Dimensions often matter more than the last few quality points

A 4000-pixel image displayed at 1000 pixels carries unnecessary data. Reducing it to appropriate dimensions can create a major saving while allowing a healthier quality setting.

Set the output dimensions for the real use first. Then lower quality gradually until the saving is worthwhile without obvious damage.

Inspect the areas people notice

Check faces, hair, small text, logos, smooth skies and color gradients. Common warning signs include blockiness, halos around edges, banding and smeared texture.

Judge the image at the size people will normally see. Extreme zoom reveals encoding details that may never be visible in the final page or form.

Avoid repeated lossy exports

Opening a JPEG and saving it again with lossy compression can introduce another generation of artifacts. Keep a high-quality master and create each delivery version from that source.

When a strict KB limit is required, change dimensions and quality from the master instead of repeatedly compressing the previous result.

  • Start around a balanced quality setting rather than the minimum.
  • Compare the downloaded file at normal display size.
  • Use a lower width before choosing an unusably low quality.
  • Record settings that work for repeated website or form exports.
