KB and KiB are not the same
Decimal units use powers of 1000: one KB is 1000 bytes and one MB is 1,000,000 bytes. Binary units use powers of 1024: one KiB is 1024 bytes and one MiB is 1,048,576 bytes.
Operating systems, storage manufacturers and upload forms may label these units differently. When a limit is strict, check whether the service means decimal MB or binary MiB.
Why a drive appears smaller after formatting
Storage products are commonly sold with decimal units, while some software reports capacity using binary calculations. Formatting and system files also consume part of the available space.
